Compared to What?
In Memoriam Dr. Wolf Leon

I watch you talk to your father,
Talk for hours on the phone,
And I marvel at this closeness,

Know he is among the many
People who have benefited
From your patient, gentle caring.

You would tell me small details from
These hour-long conversations,
And I understood his influence,

When he would ask, Compared to what?
No absolute statements allowed,
After years of clinical thought.

A life of weighing pros and cons,
We must say, Sorry, Wolf, this time
It is wrong and we have suffered

What must always be
An absolute loss.
