The newspaper launched the contest in response to the German government’s decision to criminally prosecute a German comedian, Jan Böhmermann, for a tv appearance in which he read a poem satirizing Turkey’s dictatorial President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. You heard that right! The German government is censoring and prosecuting a German comedian for satirizing a foreign tyrant who has persecuted journalists and undermined Turkey’s secular state, all the while building himself a palace to live in.
