Translation of Li Qingzhao’s “As if in a Dream Made: Don’t You Know?”

“As if in a Dream Made: Don’t You Know?”
by Li Qingzhao

Sudden winds scatter last night’s rain showers,
Heavy sleep failed to clear my head of wine.
I ask you as you’re rolling up the blinds,
But you say the crab apple is unchanged.

Don’t you know?
Don’t you know?

By now the foliage should be thick and green
With flowers blooming delicate and red.

Translated by AGG20160506.

Depth Charge:  As part of the “Our Tears Become a Language” project, I will be doing my own translation of 64 poems by, or attributed to, Li Qingzhao.

55th Birthday: A Response to Li Qingzhao’s “Long-lived Happiness (Nanchang Birthday)”

Another ride on the rock
Round the dying fireball
That makes fifty-five
I awake to March snowfall
The offer of a fresh start

Then the Grindr Hey!
It’s still dark when you arrive
Beautiful black hair
Brown eyes smooth skin and hard cock
Full of human need

For intimacy
Sexual complicity
That soft hard power
Men ready willing able
Together we manifest

Getting up a second time
New snow already almost gone
I pull the curtains
Open the sunlight dazzles
Your naked body

You appeared out of
The night disappear into
The day like the dreams
I felt move you in your sleep
Amazed within my tight arms

Revised Response to Li Qingzhao’s “As if in a Dream: A Song”

Last night
Drifting rain showers
Sudden winds
Even these could not dispel
This long winter’s perpetual hangover

I ask as you roll up the blinds—
But you say
The ice and snow are unchanged

Then the sunlight sudden bright
Falling into your dark skin
Unsheathes every cell in my body
Up until that very moment
Dull—muffled—wrapped
Each alone enshrouded
Now raw unravelling
All the fibres of our separate being

Don’t you know?
Don’t you know?
We will be the green leaves fattening
Become the flowers slender when in bloom

Tune: “As in a Dream: A Song,” Two Lyrics
by Li Qingzhao

Last night, a bit of rain, gusty wind
a deep sleep did not dispel the last of the wine,
I ask the maid rolling up the blinds—
but she replies: “The crab apple is just as it was.”

Doesn’t she know?
Doesn’t she know?
The leaves should be lush and the petals frail.

Finally at 5 o’clock: A Response to Li Qingzhao’s “New Lotus Leaves”

Finally at 5 o’clock
In a lightly drifting snow
Alone in the woods
The world poised to fall into
Another dark night

Sometimes forgetting
Becomes a powerful form
Of self-protection
Not simple dark denial
But freeing white erasure

More ephemeral
Than gravitational waves
Your absence lifts me
Knowing the snow doesn’t fall
Rather we rise up through it

As on the day I was born
The dragon raised its horned head
From the frozen seas
Though I couldn’t see it then
Through my newly opened eyes

My heart rises up: A Response to Li Qingzhao’s “Bodhisattva’s Gold Headdress”

Unde aether sidera pascit? Omnia enim debet, mortali corpore quae sunt, infinita aetas consumpse anteacta diesque. De Rerum Natura, Lucretius.
How is it that the sky feeds the stars? For infinite time and the days that are gone by must needs have devoured all things that are of mortal body.

As the slenderest of moons
Glowing falls into the west
Winter’s snow still young
Clarifies the spreading dusk
My heart rises up

Dark skies feed bright stars
Memories revive the dead
Silently shining
Back home the cold quickly fades
But faces and names linger

Nostalgia
bu Li Qingzhao

A mild sun, a soft breeze,
The touch of a lined coat just put on:
Early springtime finds me
In a somewhat cheerful mood.
There’s a bit of chill, though, on getting up,
And the plum blossom in my hair
Has wilted.

My old home-where may it be?
There’s no forgetting about that
Unless I am drunk.
No scent left of the sandalwood incense
Lit overnight,
But the effect of wine
Is with me still.

Charlottetown Harbour (After A Fresh Snowfall): A Response to Li Qingzhao’s “Long-lived Happiness (Nanchang Birthday)”

The snow finally falls
A luxury of sadness
Covering another year
In the false promise
Of a blank sheet

I see in the eighty-year-old
Eyes of my father—forgetting
Does not bring calm
Only confusion and anger
Or—at best—a bone-tired resignation

This is the false peace of retreat
With no chance of victory
Some other day

The long years stretch life and memory
Thinner and thinner still
Until they are twin mirrors

The grey glass of the harbour water
Reflecting the sky clouded grey

The Luxury: A Response to “Bowl of Green Jade”, Attributed to LI Qingzhao

子曰:「學而時習之,不亦說乎?有朋自遠方來,不亦樂乎?人不知而不慍,不亦君子乎?」
The Master said, “Is it not pleasant to learn with a constant perseverance and application? Is it not delightful to have friends coming from distant quarters? Is he not a man of complete virtue, who feels no discomposure though men may take no note of him?”
Confucius, The Analects, Translated by James Legge

The leaves fell for you
One final time—red and gold
Fifteen years later
Red and gold—falling again
Do you think they remember?

Now a southern wind
Moistens all the fallen leaves
A tropical storm
Awake at night I listen
To its final tears streaming

The most dramatic
Season—beginning in heat
Ending with the frost—
The fall is only one-third
Over—bare branches creaking

Tonight I will share
Food with a mutual friend
In from out of town
As always we’ll talk of you
And then slip into silence

It’s a luxury
Really to have someone else
To share memories
Of the dead—I pity those
Who talk only to tombstones

AGG20151030

Tune: Bowl of Green Jade

Spring’ s glory-how far is it advanced?
Two-thirds already gone.
Lush foliage deep in verdure,
Red blossoms all smiles:
Are barely passable.
A courtyard shadowy under weeping willows,
A room with curtains brushed by warm breeze:
Here’s someone withering away!

A riot of flowers on sale for my choosing
I ride through the streets of Chang’an, wine my freight—
What are these beside the peach and plum of my native hills?
Blame not the east wind bringing tears to a wanderer’s eyes!
Nostalgic feelings are hard to express;
Cherished dreams—a mere illusion.
What can I do but return to my home town?

Translated by Jiaosheng Wang.

The Spider: A Response to “Bodhisattva’s Gold Headdress,” Attributed to Li Qingzhao

The pale spider on a silver thread
Descends from the ceiling into clouds
Of dust—all the dust of would and could
And should—grey on grey and grey.
Its eight slender legs pick a delicate,
Noteless melody towards the bed,
There, only two days dust has settled,
All sudden motion having ceased at that time.
The spider crosses the newfound stillness
Enshrouded in twisted, layered sheets,
As a strange perfume fills the shuttered room,
Soon—very soon—the only world it’s known
Will be gone, swept away with all the grey
Dust of would and could and should.

“Bodhisattva’s Gold Headdress”
Attributed to Li Qingzhao
Translated by Andrew Grimes Griffin

Golden sparrows fly above clouds of dark hair,
Worried eyebrows hold back pale spring’s  thin mists.
Hibiscus fragrance suffuses the closed chamber,
Screened off by layers of receding mountains.

Shuttered in by cold weather she longs for daybreak,
Still bound up  like lettuce leaves around its tender heart.
Tears streak her clothing with face powder,
She asks which day will see his return?

A Carload of Poets: A Response to “Bowl of Green Jade” by Li Qingzhao

A small island
In a  sea of secrets, some
As big as a blue whale, others
As tiny as a sand flea,
Dangerous conversations fuelled
By Ten Pennies and Crown Royal,
Bio-luminescent sparks,
Dark—winter-night dark,
Bright—impossible-star bright,
Accented words echoing stark
Rhythms, as endless as the water and sky
When they merge into that singular colour
The one that means reflected need.

Remind me one more time,
Why did we all hurry to leave?

A couple have since returned
Like the eagles, the cormorants and the crows,
To find such purpose as may be found, perched
Beside eroding red cliffs,
The rest of us
Touchdown,
Take off,
Singly, or in small groups,
But rarely in the autumn,
After the yellowing leaves have all fallen,
When we might eavesdrop
On the sky as it comes right down
In cold, streaking tears
To trouble the waters
With whispers of woe and wonder.

Tune: Bowl of Green Jade
A Fortuitous Meeting
by Li Qingzhao

Haste not back so soon!
No glimpse yet of Handan Road 1
For all our peregrinations.
Autumn wind so dreary,
How are we to while our days away?
A drink under a clear window,
An idle chat beside a dim lamp,
Would be the ideal way to relax.

Each laments her declining years as we meet,
Chanting many a new verse with thrilling rhymes—
Poetic talent a family tradition people much prize.2
Now frail and decrepit,
Nothing remains to me but profuse tears
Falling like rain in the season of yellowing plums.

1 Legend has it that a scholar named Lu, while travelling on Handan Road, met a Taoist priest who gave him a magic pillow. When he went to sleep, he dreamed that he passed several decades living in wealth and prosperity. But on waking he found that the pot of millet he had left boiling on the stove was not yet done.

2 One day Xie An the Imperial Tutor (c. third century) was at home with his nephew Xie Lang and niece Xie Taoyun when it suddenly began to snow. He asked each of them good-humoredly what the snowflakes looked like. Xie Lang thought they might be likened to grains of salt dropped from the air. But Taoyun said the simile wasn’t so good as ‘willow catkins whirling in the wind’. Thenceforth ‘salt and willow catkin’ came to be regarded as a family tradition of literary talent.
