Now I know fish sing

Now I know fish sing
Like the birds at dusk and dawn
Strangeness fills my heart
With a gladness—submarine
Their choral celebrations

Mark each arriving
Each passing day—til the day
This is forgotten—
Why should our memories last
Forever—when love  will not

Depth Charge: Scientists have been listening in on the songs sung by fish in coral reefs.

Dark Matter

Something moves out there
Unseen—its darkness binding
Us all together—
Whole galaxies in its grip
What is this spiderless web?

These Mere Hearts of Stone

A scientific man ought to have no wishes, no affections, – a mere heart of stone.
Charles Darwin

Not for a minute
Should you think mere hearts of stone
Do not feel as much
As less durable beings
Whose stay in this world is brief

Fermion Hearts Boson Beds

Our fermion hearts
Bound through endless boson beds
Ceaselessly waving
In opposite directions
Across promiscuous glue

AGG20150117

Depth Charge: Fermions are elementary particles that cannot share the same quantum state. Bosons are unlimited in the number that can share the same quantum state and, furthermore, they carry the force that holds matter together. This is my first attempt at poetry inspired by The Quantum Moment, Robert B. Crease and Alfred Scharff Goldhaber.

Geometries of Time (Farewell, 2014)

Some say that it’s an arrow straight flying,
Others a circle, a spiral spinning,
But I do not know which geometry
Could do the trick of squaring the circle
Of this past year, could connect its patterns:
An evening of pleasant sensations,
Walking through a world muted by soft snows
To fall deeply asleep in his warm arms,
Circuses, sex, dancing, salt-water swims,
Ferguson, the disappearance of Doug
And Ziad, perhaps a mad multiverse,
Invisible to our quickly fading
Eyes that scan such a limited spectrum,
Knowing but never seeing what’s to come.

“The Constant Pressure of Starlight”

Starlight presses down
Through all unimagined space
Drifting its dark dusts
Into our collapsing hearts
Dispersing what could have been

When you first kissed me
Did you know there are fewer
Stars than there should be
And the dust we are now shines
With all their missing brightness?
