I don’t give a fuck about you, lilac

I don’t give a fuck about you, lilac;
I care only for how you make me feel.
If I describe your delicate petals,
Purple, intoxicating bursts of scent,
Surrounded by clusters of heart-shaped leaves,
Returning eternal every spring,
It is really all about my sadness,
So don’t go getting all high on yourself.

“It is often noted that the Irish poet was not so much concerned with the actual description of nature as with his own emotional response to its endlessly varied phenomena…” Prionsias MacCana, from Early and Middle Irish Literature (c. 600 – c. 1600), p. 2, The Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing
